MEDICAL TREATISES: written in England in the hand of several scribes; 15th cent. Latin and English. With some rubrication and decorated initials. Earlier owners include John Irton (late 15th cent.), Robert Syddall, circa 1600, and John Byrom (d. 1763). The volume was bequeathed by Byrom to Chetham's Library, Manchester (press-mark MS.B.6.60). Purchased from Alan G. Thomas, Cat. 143, no. 8, 22 Oct. 1981.
Paper; ff. iii+260. 146 x 110mm. Gatherings mostly of 12. Rebacked in 1879, but still in the original binding of blind-stamped calf over wooden boards by the 'Crucifer Binder' (nine examples of the work of this binder have so far been recorded; see M. M. Foot, The Book Collector, XXVIII, 1979, p. 554).
1. ff. 1-90. The 'Regimen Salernitanum'.
2. ff. 91-98v. A treatise in English on toothache, beg. 'The peynes of the tethe ben nombred of Haly Abbas in sermone XX primo partis libri disposicionis regalis'; apparently incomplete at the end.
3. ff. 111-201. A treatise on medicine described in the colophon as 'sententia abstracta causarum problematum Aristotelis', and beg. 'Felix qui poterit rerum cognoscere causas'.
4. ff. 203v-260. A treatise on urine, beg. 'Aquarum quatuor sunt qualitates'.
