GLENBERVIE MEMORANDUM: memorandum by Sylvester Douglas, Baron Glenbervie, describing French society in 1770-1771; 1772. Copy, aft. 1794, with autograph annotations aft. 1819 (f. 1). French. Originally written for Col. Horace St Paul on his being appointed secretary to Lord Stormont, Ambassador in Paris, in 1772. The present copy was made from the original by Katherine, Lady Glenbervie (see The Diaries of Sylvester Douglas, Lord Glenbervie, ed. Francis Bickley, 1928, II, p. 382), and dates from 1794 or later. The memorandum is followed (f. 23) by a copy of an entry in a Bible concerning Glenbervie's marriage (1789) and the birth of his son (1791). Sold at Phillips', 2 July 1981, part of lot 308. Purchased from Lawrence of Crewkerne, 11 March 1982, lot 263.
Paper; ff. 24. Copied into a volume of blank paper, bound in the original brown leather, with a partially illegible ink inscription, ending 'VIII' on the spine. 272 x 215mm.
