STATUTES OF THE REALM, ETC.: a collection of legal and historical tracts probably compiled in London; early 14th cent, with later additions. Latin and French. With extensive rubrication and some decorated and illuminated initials, and including (f. 155v) full-page pen sketches of St George and the dragon, and (f. 297v) the Crucifixion, late 15th cent., the former signed by 'Thomas Exylby of Dyffyth, Gentylman'. Other owners include Sir John Doddridge, judge (1555-1628) (f. 13), Edward Henden, Baron of the Exchequer, 1639 (f. 12), Thomas Granger (d. 1732) and Joseph Ames (1689-1759), both manuscript and book collectors (f. 13). Purchased at Sotheby's, 22 June 1982, lot 71.
Vellum, with (ff. 1-11) 18th cent.(?) paper lists of contents; ff. 297 (1-167; 168-297). Old foliation (17th cent.?): 1-283. 230 x 168mm. Gatherings partly signed 'I-III, IV-XIII, XIV', with unsigned gatherings interpolated and following; gatherings of 8, except i7, iii10, xv6, xvi3, xvii14, xviii6, xix4, xx6, xxi4, xxiii6, xxiv4, xxv3, xxx6, xxxiii6, xxxiv10, xxxv5, xxxvi4, xxxvii5, xxxviii10, xl6, xli6, xlii3. A number of leaves are stubs, but without apparent loss of text. In various early 14th cent. cursive book hands. Rebound by the British Library in two volumes (ff. 1-167, 168-297).

1. ff. 14-167. Collection of Statutes, also containing the Summa Magna of Ralph Hengham.
2. ff. 168-173v. 'Cas des brefs', notes on pleading related to Casus Placitorum, ed. W. H. Dunham, Selden Society, LXIX (1950).
3. ff. 177v-178. Cap. 1 of the anonymous tract, Seneschaucy. Not included in the list of manuscripts in D. Oschinsky, Walter of Henley (Oxford, 1971), pp. 75-99, 261-306.
4. f. 180. Sketch map in ink of Heslerton (also known as Snainton?) mill and surrounding pastures, etc., 'En La Counte Deverwyk' (i.e. co. York.), [by Thomas Nycholas of Bridlington?]; early 16th cent. Variable scale; south at top. The mill is shown in elevation. Apparently relating to a boundary dispute between Snainton and Pickering. The mill is shown in elevation.
5. ff. 182-241v. Register of Writs. Not included in the list of manuscript registers in E. de Haas and G. Hall, Early Registers of Writs, Selden Society, LXXXVI (1970), pp. xxiii-xxvii.
