CRANBROOK PAPERS: private and political correspondence of Gathorne Gathorne-Hardy, 1st Earl of Cranbrook; 1866-1904, n.d. Chiefly letters to Cranbrook, but including a few letters from him, together with three letters to Thomas Longman the publisher (ff. 160-164) and a printed card relating to rocket experiments at Farnborough Hill and Crystal Palace in 1871 (ff. 158-159). Left to a member of Cranbrook's family by 'T. M. L.' (f. 165v), probably Thomas Norton Longman (d. 1930). An envelope addressed to Cranbrook's son, A. E. Gathorne-Hardy, Jan. 1910 (f. 157), suggests that these letters were available to him when he prepared his Gathorne Hardy, first Earl of Cranbrook, 2 vols (Longman, 1910), but none appears to have been printed. Another T. N. Longman item was sold at the same time as the Cranbrook letters (lot 317 in the sale below). Purchased from Lawrence of Crewkerne, 28 Oct. 1982, lot 326.
Paper; ff. 165. British Library arrangement.
