GEORGE, EARL MACARTNEY: diplomatic instructions, papers and letters sent to Macartney by the Foreign Secretary, Lord Grenville, and Under Secretaries, George Canning and George Aust, mostly relating to his secret mission to Louis XVIII in exile in Verona; 1795, 1796. Partly cipher, with deciphering by Macartney. Partly French. Also included (ff. 30-31) is a printed copy of a loyalist manifesto, issued in the name of Joseph, Comte de Puisaye. Two letters from Grenville and the Home Secretary, Henry Dundas (ff. 57-60), refer to a subsequent offer to Macartney of the Governorship of the Cape of Good Hope. See also Add. 59052, ff. 27, 33, for further correspondence of Grenville and Macartney. Purchased by Sir Thomas Phillipps (MS. 19002) at the Macartney sale, Puttick and Simpson, 24 Jan. 1854. Lot 908 in the Phillipps sale at Sotheby's, 23 May 1913. Bookplate of Otto Orren Fisher (f. ii). Purchased at Swann Galleries, New York, 21 April 1983, lot 15.
