MOHUN CHRONICLE: prologue and opening chapters of a chronicle of world history with special reference to the Mohun family, composed by Walter de la Hove, Abbot of Newenham, and dedicated to Lady Joan de Mohun of Dunster; 1341-1348. French. The present manuscript consists of the first gathering of a volume which was still extant in 1610, when it was known as the Red Book of the Abbot of Newenham. The Mohun Register, now Eg. 3724, was composed as a supplement to Abbot Walter's Chronicle. See Devon Notes and Queries, IV (1906-1907), pp. 17-22 and 249-252, and H. Maxwell-Lyte, History of Dunster (1909), p. 49. In the possession of Sir Reginald Mohun, 1st Bart., of Boconnoc, in 1610. Owned in 1907 by Elizabeth and Beatrix, the daughters of Sir Walter Carew, 8th Bart., of Haccombe, and in 1983 by Sir Rivers Carew, Bart. Purchased at Sotheby's, 6 Dec. 1983, lot 60.
Vellum; ff. 8. 237 x 170mm. A single gathering of 8 leaves. Single columns of thirty-three lines, written in brown ink in an English cursive bookhand, with headings in red, capitals touched in red and initials decorated with red and blue penwork.
