William Lambarde's map of warning beacons in Kent
- Scope & Content:
-
William Lambarde's map of beacons in Kent, endorsed, in a hand resembling Lambarde's, 'Carde of the Beacons in Kent'. In the 1580s and 1590s Lambarde was deputy lieutenant to Lord Cobham, who commissioned the map in order to have multiple copies made as a guide to the effective use of beacons.
The positions of about fifty beacons are indicated, with lines in red ink indicating the direction of the signals given off by them. Prick holes, pencilled numbers and light inked crosses suggest that it was intended to create a graticule (network of lines of latitude and longitude)across the map, possibly as a preliminary to copying it for engraving. The scale varies, but is c. 1:230,000.
The coastal outlines and lines of rivers are copied from the anonymous map of 'The Shyre of Kent, Divided into the five Lathes therof' (c. 1577), itself based on Saxton's 1575 map of the four south-eastern counties.
It may have been intended for presentation to the Beresford family of Squerries manor, Westerham, which is specially depicted. Several Lambarde manuscripts were sold in 1924 by his last male descendant, William Gore Lambarde of Sevenoaks (see Warnicke, William Lambarde, Elizabethan Antiquary, pp. 138–39). It was unknown before about 1930, when it was in the possession of the parents of D. Brackley, who came from the Sevenoaks and Westerham areas.
