NAVAL SIGNAL BOOK; circa 1747-1748. A naval officer's privately made pocket signal book, derived from the printed Sailing and Fighting Instructions but arranged for ready reference with a thumb index of 60 flags in colour. Further illustrated with 28 watercolour drawings of ships showing their use, and 18 larger representations of the flags. Also listed in some cases are directions for positioning signals, and their meanings. Included (ff. 30v-34) are additional signals issued by Vice-Admiral Anson (Vice-Admiral of the Blue, July 1746) and Rear Admiral Sir Peter Warren (Vice-Admiral, July 1747). Similar in format to the printed signal book by John Millan, Signals for the Royal Navy (1746-1748).
