Roger of St Albans, Progenie regum Angliae, a genealogical roll chronicle of the Kings of England
- Scope & Content:
-
Contents:
Progenies regum Angliae or the St Albans chronicle, a genealogical diagram of the descent of the Kings of England to Edward IV (r. 1461-1483) with a commentary to Henry VI, attributed to Roger Alban O'Carm or Roger of St Albans (d. after 1461).
In the central column, each ruler is represented by a gold crown with a large double roundel containing his name. Other lines of descent and claimants to the throne are in smaller roundels in the central space, with commentary on either side. In the margins are roundels with the line of descent of Popes (left) and Emperors (right). The first membrane, with the descent from Noah is lacking:
Membranes 1-2: The genealogy begins at King Heli and his son Lud, followed by the first Roman ruler, Cassibellanus; the commentary begins 'Iste Hely regnavit xl annis'.
Membrane 3: The central column is replaced by seven parallel lines of descent for the Anglo-Saxon heptarchy, with seven sets of crowns
Membranes 4-6: A single line of descent is resumed at Egbert (r. 802-839). From the time of Henry I (r. 1100-1135 there are several branches in different colours to show the Plantaganet, York and Lancastrian lines of descent.
The dorse of the roll is blank (dorse abbreviated as d).
Roger of St Albans was a Carmelite friar based in London in the 1450s and named as the scribe of Harley MS 3138 (dated 1424), Harley MS 211, and Stowe MS 8.
Other copies of the St Albans chronicle are in Add MS 24342, Harley Roll T 12 and Royal MS 14 B VIII.

Crowns in red, green, brown or blue with gold. Lines of descent are represented as branches in green with leaves in brown or in blue, red, light brown or yellow. Roundels in red and blue or red and brown. Initials in blue and names in red.
