Correspondence, etc., of James Brant (C.B. 1860; d. 1861, cf. Foreign Office List, Jan. 186+2, pp. 163-164, and Add. MS. 39102, f. 95), as British Vice-Consul at Trebizond, 1830-1836, and thereafter Consul at Erzerum, 1836-1856, 1861. The latter part of the correspondence concerns the Russian siege of Kars (1855), and includes numerous letters from Gen. W. Fenwick Williams (Bart. 1856), the defender of Kars, as British Commissioner for the settlement of the Turco-Persian boundary (1848-1853) and as Commissioner with the Turkish Army in Anatolia (1854- 1855), as well as from his secretary, H. A. Churchill; cf. Papers relative to military affairs in Asiatic Turkey and the defence and capitulation of Kars, presented to both Houses of Parliament ... 1856. Other frequent correspondents include Col. F. R. Chesney, the explorer, Sir John McNeill and Sir Charles Augustus Murray, Ministers at Teheran, and Lord Stratford de Redcliffe. The names of all the writers are given in the Index to this Catalogue. Paper. Three volumes. Folio and (42566) quarto. 1830-1861. Add. MSS. 42512, 42565 and 42566 were presented by Commander James Brant, R.N., son of James Brant, Consul at Erzerum.
