SIR WILLIAM TRUMBULL, SECRETARY OF STATE: commonplace book comprising a 'Synopsis Logicae' and historical notes; circa 1657. Autograph. Latin. The notebook, dated 1657 by Trumbull (see f. ii verso), was used by him when a student at Oxford. It comprises a summary of logic (ff. 4-35), and historical notes (ff. 95v-90v, vol. rev.) relating to sixteenth-century Flanders, taken from Books I and II of an unidentified work. On f. ii verso is written 'Gulielmus Trumball liber ejus 1657' but the date has subsequently been emended in a different ink to 1653, perhaps because this is the date that occurs on f. ii, below the partially deleted name of an earlier owner, William []. At a sale of Trumbull family papers from Easthampstead Park this manuscript was paired with another containing 'Praxis Grammatica in Xenophontis Cyri Vitam & disciplinam': see Sotheby's sale-cat., 30 July 1963, lot 586. Presented by Lawrence Heyworth, Esq., 30 April 1990.
Paper; ff. v+104. Folios 1-3 and 100-104 are stubs. 125 x 72mm. Original calf binding, blind-stamped.
