MOHL PAPERS: correspondence between Mary Mohl née Clarke, conversationalist (b.1793, d.1883), and her husband Julius Mohl, orientalist (b.1800, d.1876); 1828-1875, n.d. Add. 70611, 70612, 70613, ff. 1-90, 70617 f. 201, and 70624 ff. 1-19 are typewritten copies, whilst Add. 70624, ff. 20-150 consists of MS. transcripts. Partly French and German. Including a few letters to and from members of the Mohls' circle, and some 20th-century correspondence on the disposal of the archive. The volumes for 1871 contain letters describing life in Paris under the Commune. Supplementary correspondence with Florence Nightingale and her family can be found in Add. 43397 and 46385. The chronological sequence of the letters was established initially by Mme Mohl, and completed by her nephew Ottmar von Mohl and her great-nephew Hans von Mohl. The letters were seen but not extensively used by Mary Charlotte Mair Simpson when compiling her Letters and Recollections of Julius and Mary Mohl (1887).
