SPEECHES IN PARLIAMENT: with miscellaneous verses; circa 1626. The collection was apparently owned or compiled by Knightley Chetwode of Chetwode, co. Bucks, student of Lincoln's Inn after 4 Feb. 1622/3 and eponymous uncle of the future Dean of Gloucester. His name, along with that of Jane Chetwode, probably his sister, is jotted on the front cover (f. i). Also included (ff. 25-33v), in another hand, are notes of sermons by Obadiah Grew D.D., circa 1651-1662. From the family papers of Sylvester Douglas, Baron Glenbervie (d.1823), now preserved in the National Library of Scotland. Presented by Winkworth and Pemberton (solicitors) of Oxford, through the British Records Association (Deposit 2378) and the National Library of Scotland, 5 Dec. 1990.
Paper; ff. ii+44. 187 x 147mm. Formerly gathered in eights, the present ff. 41, 42 being stubs, with traces of stubs between ff. 5, 6; 24, 25; 33, 34, etc. Contemporary limp vellum covers.
The principal contents are as follows:
1. ff. 2-13v. Speeches, etc., made during the parliament of 1626, chiefly relating to the attempted impeachment of George Villiers, 1st Duke of Buckingham, viz: - (a) 'Sir John Elliott's conclusive Speech'; 10 May 1626. ff. 2-8v; - (b) 'A Message delivered by the Lord Keeper 21 Aprill. 1626'. ff. 8v, 9; - (c) 'A Speech delivered by the Speaker from the Commons [to Charles I, relating to supply; 11 March]. 1626'. ff. 9-10. Together with (d) 'The Kinges [i.e. James I's] Speach to the Lords of the Parliament May the 5th 1624', relating to the impeachment of Lionel Cranfield, Earl of Middlesex. ff. 10-13v.
2. ff. 14-18. 'Words spoke by Sir Walter Rawleigh at his death'; 29 Oct. 1618. The speech is followed by Ralegh's verses beg. 'Even such is time which takes in trust'.
3. ff. 19-22v. 'The Propositions which the Kinge of Greate Brittaine proffereth touchinge the Match betweene the Prince of Wales & the Infanta of Spayne sent to Rome together with the Popes replyes & demaundes'; mid 1623.
4. ff. 25-33v. Notes of three sermons delivered by Obadiah Grew (D.D. 1651), preacher at St Michael's, Coventry, copied in a hand different from the above; circa 1651-1662. Including (ff. 25-25v) 'Dr Grew his sermon preached at Michels. John: 6: 29'.
5. f. 43v. Two sets of verse, copied respectively in the two main hands on the penultimate leaf (vol. rev.) viz: - (a) Three couplets beg. 'Make me weake in thigh & hand': - (b) Three couplets beg. 'Virtue is arm'd against all wrongs'.
