WAR OF THE AUSTRIAN SUCCESSION: 'March of the Brittish troops in Germany 1743'. Scale circa 1:320,000. The map, oriented with north-east at the top, shows the route of march from Aix La Chapelle to 'Ashaffenbourg' (Aschaffenburg), crossing the Rhine north of Koblenz, and from Aschaffenburg west to Mainz and then south to Speyer. The Allied army gathered in Flanders in February but heavy snow prevented the British commander Stair leaving his quarters at Aix before the end of April. George II joined the army at Hanau on 9 June, and the battle of Dettingen (about seven miles north-west of Aschaffenburg) was fought on 16 June. The campaign was concluded by a treaty signed at Worms on 2 September: the Allied army advanced to join Dutch troops at Speyer on 25 September, with the object of uniting with the forces of Prince Charles of Lorraine, but as he was unable to force a passage of the Rhine, the Allied army retreated to Mainz on 11 October and shortly afterwards broke up to return to winter quarters. For full accounts of the campaign and the battle of Dettingen, see R. Rolt, An impartial representation of the conduct of the several powers of Europe engaged in the late general war, 4 vols. (1749-1750), Vol. II, pp. 291-405, and Sir E. Cust, Annals of the wars of the eighteenth century, 5 vols. (1857-1860), Vol. I, pp. 28-37. On the verso of the map in an 18th cent. hand, the title of the map is repeated as 'March of the Allied army from Aschaffenburg &c'. The title appears in slightly different wording on a modern typed label now attached to the mount of the map, with annotations in pencil, 'Versailles Ky. 1938. Original map given to F. W. Boulton, by Roy Carruthers, from his collection of prints etc.'. Purchased from Ritzlin of Chicago, April 1992.
Ink and watercolours on paper: 2 sheets, joined, 235 x 700mm. and 370 x 240mm.
