HERALDIC COLLECTIONS: 'the Names of the maior part of the Nobility, Bannerets, Knights, Esquiers and Gent of England' from 1 Stephen to 36 Henry VIII [1135-1544], mostly collected (notes f. iii and vi) by Sir William Le Neve, Clarenceux (d. 1661), but completed and arranged Sir Edward Walker, Garter (d. 1677); 1664. Partly Latin and French. Copies in the hands of William Le Neve (passim), John Anstis the Elder (ff. iv-v, 356v-357v) and others, with some autograph notes by Walker. An integral index A-N is at the end on ff. vi-viii verso. Partly illustrated with drawings of arms in trick and badges. Possibly acquired by Walker with Le Neve's library in 1663 (see Add. Ch. 71076). Pressmark B 5 (f. iv) of John Anstis the Elder? Owned in the 20th century by W. J. Andrew of Michelmersh near Romsey and William Vandeleur Crake of St Leonards on Sea. Sold at Sotheby's, 30 June 1964, lot 484. Purchased from J. L. M. Gulley, May 1989.
Paper; ff. xi+389 [+240*, 283*]. One leaf with ruled margins excised between ff. 56 and 57 before original foliation, and f. 250 excised after foliation. Contemporary binding of brown calf with two stamped metal clasps and the arms of Sir Edward Walker on both covers. Some loss of text by cropping (ff. 232-247).

1. ff. 1-2v. Charter of Stephen to Winchester relating to the exchange of Bishop's Sutton, co. Hants for Steeple Morden, co. Cambs.; 1136. Printed in H. A. Cronne and R. H. C. Davis Regesta Regum Anglo-Normannorum III (1968), no. 944.
2. ff. 232-247b. A version of the first Calais [Agincourt?] Roll, a 16th century roll of arms based on accounts of Sir Walter de Wetewang [Wentwage], treasurer of the household, of wages paid to soldiers before Calais in 1346-1347 [1344-1347 Stowe 574], also details of fleets and foreign allies. [Names of the chief captains who were with Edward III with the numbers serving under each of them]. Illustrated with ink drawings of arms. See Add. 38823, ff. 59- , Stowe 574, ff. 28- and L. Campbell and F. W. Steer Catalogue of MSS in the College of Arms. Printed from a roll by E.R. Mores, Oxford 1749.
3. ff. 266v-296v. 'The Kinges Booke' of all the lords, knights, etc. of England from Cornwall to Cumbria; 1501. Copied by Sir Edward Walker from a 'Booke of Collections' of Francis Thynne, Lancaster Herald.
4. ff. 302-339v, 341-357v. List of persons sworn in various counties; 1 May 1434. Compare Calendar of Patent Rolls 1429-1436, pp. 370-413. Followed by additions by Walker and John Anstis, ff. 356v-357v.
5. ff. 340-340v. Descent of the family of Walker of Castern, co. Staff. by Sir Edward Walker, covering the period from 1434-1666.
6. ff. 376-379. List of captains and retinues which went to Normandy with Edward IV with their wages; 1475. Illustrated with small drawings of badges, ink over pencil, based on Barnard's roll of badges. See College of Arms MS 16 bis, ff. 16-19v and edition by F. P Barnard (1925).
7. ff. 380-383v. 'The appoyntement for the kinge and the Quene to Canterbury and so to Calays and Guysnes to the metinge of the ffrenche kinge. 1520'; 1520 - circa 1570 [watermark].
