PROVENCE, DAUPHINE, AND PIEDMONT: military map of Provence, Dauphiné, and part of Piedmont; circa 1710. The map gives information relating to enemy (i.e. Allied) landings to 1707, but not later, although there were a number of incidents after 1707 which would have been worthy of note. Circa 1:247000. 'Echelle de 8 grandes lieues de France'; scale bar of 8 lieues (= 162 mm.). The map covers the coast of the south of France from a little west of Marseille to 'Final' (Finale, now in Italy), and inland, as far north as Vienne in the west and Masserano in the east. Valleys and mountains are shown in relief. Fortresses are also marked, and a key to the roads (in the lower right corner of the map) explains which can be travelled on foot, on horseback, or with artillery, and which are passable in winter. The key also provides an explanation for the anchor symbols shown outside ports; these indicate suitability as a watering station, disembarcation point for troops, or base for a fleet.
