SMILES PAPERS. Correspondence and papers of and concerning Samuel Smiles (b.1812, d.1904), author and social reformer; 1782-[1992?]. See also Add. Ch. 76774-76790. The collection relates principally to Smiles's biographical publications, and sub-sections contain papers of and concerning the following: James Nasmyth (b.1808, d.1890), engineer; Thomas Edward (b.1814, d.1886), naturalist; and Josiah Wedgwood (b.1730, d.1795), potter. Material from these sub-sections was published in James Nasmyth, Engineer: An Autobiography (1883); Life of a Scotch Naturalist (1876); and Josiah Wedgwood, F.R.S.: His Personal History (1894). The Nasmyth sub-section contains a large number of the inventor's manuscript technical drawings and sketches. Presented (with Add. Ch. 76774-76790) by Oliver P. Hartree, great-great-grandson of Samuel Smiles, in March 1992.
