CAPTAIN JAMES COOK: fragment of the Log of the 'Resolution'; 25, 27 March 1773. Autograph. Part of a folio from the missing Log of the first part of Cook's Second Voyage, that for the second part now being Add. 27956 (see Appendix V, 'Cook's Logs and Journals', in Arthur Hugh Carrington, Life of Captain Cook (1967 ed.), pp. 305-9). On the recto is the log for 25 March 1773. The verso contains the entry for 27 March 1773, describing the arrival of the 'Resolution' at Dusky Bay, New Zealand, after the voyage from Cape Town via the Antarctic. Beg. 'About 2 o Clock in the pm after having advanced about 2 Leagues up the Bay . . . '; ends '. . . where we Anchored in a very snugh [sic] harbour in 12 fathom water muddy bottom'. The entries are transcribed, with minor textual variants, on ff. 42v (25 March), 43 (27 March) of Add. 27887, a contemporary copy of the Log. See also Cook's Journal of the voyage (Add. 27886) and the account he prepared for publication (Add. 27888). Signed note on recto by Robert Williamson recording that the fragment was given to him by Cook's widow, Eliza, in 1814. Presented anonymously.
Paper; f. 1. 160 x 285mm. approx. Paper discoloured. Five fold lines running from top to bottom. The red ink of the column rulings has faded. Some loss of text at borders and folds.
