Autograph. Mostly in condensed score, a few sections in full score. Notated in pencil throughout, with a small number of additions in ink, and annotations in German, Italian and English by Henze and others in pencil and coloured crayon, some apparently relating to the making of a piano vocal score (see note on Add. 71121, f. 34). The following sections of the work (indicated using bar nos. from the published vocal score) are lacking: Act I, scene i, bars 445-457; I.iii bars 559-592; II.iv bars 43-69 and 319-614; Interlude between scenes iv and v; II.v bars 200-219; Interlude between scenes v and vi. A note at the end of the score (Add. 71121, f. 127) refers to the absence of the last interlude. Scenes or sections have independent pencil paginations; a continuous pagination was added after the removal of the missing sections. Vocal score published Mainz: B. Schott's Söhne, 1965. First performed 7 Apr. 1965 at the Deutsche Oper, Berlin. The copy of the vocal score (German and Italian words) signed by Henze, 1965, now Music Collections press-mark G.1349.t., was received with this manuscript. Purchased from Richard Macnutt Ltd., 14 Dec. 1992.

Paper. Largest size 473 x 325mm. Written on the facing pages (verso and recto) of bifolia, originally folded in reverse. In a red velvet-covered box (now stored separately).
