ESCRICK PARK LIBRARY, E.R. CO. YORK: 'Catalogue of the Library at Escrick Park', by Francis Harvey, bookseller, of St. James's, London; Dec. 1863. The catalogue, which consists largely of printed works, was compiled in the time of Beilby Richard Lawley, formerly Thompson, 3rd Baron Wenlock (d.1880), but the contents appear to reflect the interests of successive owners of the house from at least the later seventeenth century (see VCH, E. R. Yorks, vol. III, pp. 20-21). Several works that are linked in various ways with the poet Andrew Marvell (d.1678), seem likely to have belonged to his friend Sir Henry Thompson (1626-1683), Lord Mayor of York, who bought the estate in 1668. Also included is a large collection of classical authors, in editions printed between the fifteenth and eighteenth centuries. The main catalogue, which is arranged alphabetically, occupies the rectos, with sporadic contemporary additions made on the otherwise blank versos. Purchased of Messrs. Dawsons, 16 Feb. 1993.
Paper: ff.ii+345. 320 x 200mm. Full red morocco gilt binding by Rivière, in French 18th-cent. style, lettered as above on the front cover.
