MARLBOROUGH-HEINSIUS LETTERS: letters from John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough, to Anthonie Heinsius, Grand Pensionary of Holland; 1701-1714. Mostly autograph. The first seven letters of 1701, a few later letters in secretaries' hands, and some enclosures are written in French; apart from this Marlborough wrote in English, although Heinsius replied in French. For some letters from Heinsius to Marlborough, see Add. 61171, ff. 102-218; others are in the Algemeen Rijksarchief at The Hague. The present letters are printed, together with Heinsius's letters to Marlborough, but excluding most of the enclosures, in B. van 't Hoff (ed.), The Correspondence 1701-1711 of John Churchill, First Duke of Marlborough and Anthonie Heinsius (The Hague, 1951). Two letters from Lord Godolphin to Marlborough of 25 Dec. 1704 (71137, f. ) and 18 Aug. 1705 (Add. 71138, f. ) are included as enclosures, the latter being printed in H. L. Snyder (ed.), The Marlborough-Godolphin Correspondence (Oxford, 1975), pp. 478-479. The present letters, originally part of Heinsius's archive, were presented to Sir Winston Churchill by Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands in 1945; see B. van 't Hoff (ed.), Het Archief van Anthonie Heinsius (The Hague, 1950), p. 48. They were kept first at Churchill's home at Chartwell, Kent, and then at Churchill College, Cambridge.
