IVER, CO. BUCKS. [Plan of woodland, etc., to the NE of Iver in Buckinghamshire] by 'Ralphe Treswell iunior, 1603.' 'A scale of perches at 16 foote & ½ ye perche' [= 98mm.] Circa 1:8500. Oriented with west at the top and shows the woods, heath and pastures which make up the present day Langley Park and Black Park. The different areas are named in ink on the plan, houses are marked in rudimentary perspective, and roads are marked in red, the main area of the plan being coloured with a green wash. An 'olde diche' runs across the plan west to east roughly dividing the area into two; north of this ditch there are several areas of boggy ground marked. The presence of deer is indicated by a very small picture of the animal in gold; the scale, which is surmounted by a drawing of a pair of dividers, is also coloured gold with markings in black ink, but is so worn that the figures are barely visible. To the NW and the NE, respectively, another contemporary hand has noted the location of 'Fulmer warren' and 'Iver warren'. The area shown in the plan would appear to be part of the parish and manor of Langley Marish; VCH refers to an 'exhaustive' survey of Langley Park in 1607 showing that the woodland was much decayed and badly managed. For further details see VCH Buckinghamshire, vol. 3, pp. 295-296; Norden describes Langley Park in 1607 in Harley MS 3749. Purchased from M. A. Geraghty, Esq., March 1993.
Ink and watercolours on vellum. 195 x 695mm., on sheet 210 x 705mm.
