AYSCOUGH LETTERS: letters, etc., addressed to Francis Ayscough, D.D., Dean of Bristol, clerk of the closet to Frederick, Prince of Wales (b.1700, d.1766); circa 1728-1764. Consisting of nine letters, 1736-1756, n.d., from William Pitt, Earl of Chatham (ff. 5-18), one letter of 1755 from Thomas Pitt, 1st Baron Camelford (f. 19), three unsigned letters (ff. 1, 3, 22), including one [circa 1728-1730] from the Congress of Soissons and one of 1757 giving an account of the debates in the House of Lords concerning the conduct of Admiral Byng. Followed by a certificate, dated 1764, of the birth of Ayscough's daughter Ann Augusta in 1749 (f. 25), and a 19th cent.(?) wrapper, with a list of the letters and a family tree showing the connections between Pitt, Lyttelton and Ayscough families (ff. 26-27); Thomas Pitt, Chatham's brother, and Ayscough were married respectively to Christian and Ann Lyttelton, sisters of George, 1st Baron Lyttelton.
