ORGAN MUSIC: ‘Voluntary’s and fugues for the organ or harpsichord’; 2nd half of 18th century. A collection of 28 English organ voluntaries by John James, Stanley and others, comparable with the ‘Southgate’ book in the Royal College of Organists (described in H. Diack Johnstone, ‘An Unknown Book of Organ Voluntaries’, The Musical Times, 108 (1967), pp. 1003-7) and the MSS copied by John Reading now at Dulwich College (MSS 92a, b and d) and the Henry Watson Music Library, Manchester (MS BR.m.710.5 Rf.31). None of the voluntaries is ascribed to a composer by the music scribe, but several pieces have been attributed in a nineteenth-century hand in pencil. Further pencil annotations in the hands of Susi Jeans and others identify various pieces with the contents of the Southgate book and other sources, as recorded below, but it should be noted that several of the attributions made in the Southgate book are demonstrably false (on which see B. Cooper, English Solo Keyboard Music of the Middle and Late Baroque (New York, 1989), pp. 328-9 and H. Diack Johnstone, ‘The RCO Manuscript Re-examined’, The Musical Times, 126 (1985), pp. 237-9). As was common in organ voluntaries of this period, the slow introductions and subsequent allegro sections of voluntaries are often interchanged between different pieces, even between works of different composers. The elegant title page and general appearance of the music hand are closely modelled on engraved music. See also S. Jeans, ‘James, John’ in The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians, ed. S. Sadie (1980). Inscribed (f. iii) ‘C. Cheale Septr 9/1810’. A slip pasted to the back cover is inscribed ‘Lot 3’. Formerly owned by Lady Jeans, and numbered ‘6’ by her on f. i. Purchased at Sotheby’s, 28 May 1993, lot no. 69.
