POLITICAL AND RELIGIOUS MISCELLANY; 1626-1719. Mostly copies. This volume was originally begun as an apparently first-hand account of the proceedings of the parliament of 1626, possibly by Peter Peke, covering the period from 14 April to 16 June (ff. 1-41, and 179v-115, vol. rev., passim). The remaining leaves and blank spaces were later filled with copies of letters and tracts relating to politics and religion, partly concerning dissenters and Kentish affairs and dating largely from the period 1681-1719. These include four petitions to Parliament by inhabitants of Kent, circa 1640-1642 (ff. 165-151v, vol. rev.); : 'The Character of a Tory', dated 1683 (ff. 46-51); : speeches and letters concerning religious matters in the reign of James II (ff. 17-26, 42-45 and 145-101v vol. rev.); : a petition of the publisher Francis ('Elephant') Smith to William III, circa 1689 (ff. 107v-105v); : speeches of Queen Anne, 1705-1710 (ff. 79-95); and 'The Tacker[s]', a satire in verse, probably by Charles Darby, beg. 'In vain of the Battle we boast', circa April 1705 (ff.1v-3v). Pasted inside the front cover is an engraved portrait (f. i) of Charles II as Prince of Wales, aged 12, signed with initials 'G: G[lover]'. The signature 'Tho: Peke' (f. 1) may be that of either Thomas Peke of Hill Court, Ash, co. Kent (d.1678), whose uncle, Peter Peke, had been M.P. for Sandwich in 1626 and 1628, or his son and heir of the same name (d.1701). Thomas Peke (d.1678) was executor of Peter Peke’s will. Purchased from Sotheby's, 13 Dec. 1993, lot 292.
Paper; ff.i+180. 148 x 100mm. Limp vellum covers with decorative borders, etc., added in ink.
