Belonged, on 3 Sept. 1930, to Mrs Eleanor Colville Corbally of Newbridge House, Donabate, co. Dublin (note on f. ii). Formerly inserted loose and now preserved in the Departmental collection of sale-catalogues is a copy of Christie's sale-cat. of 15 Dec. 1930, in which the present papers were lot 12. Paper; ff. ii+87. Folio [check measurements]. Interleaved in a 19th-cent. binding of half calf, lettered on the front cover 'Fairfax Letters and Manuscripts 1640-1660', and preceded (ff. 1-2b) by a calligraphic titlepage and list of contents, etc.
The collection is arranged in three sections:::

Twenty-one letters written to Chaloner by his kinsman Thomas, 3rd Baron Fairfax between 1651 and 1659 relating in part to Fairfax's dealings with the confiscated estates of the 7th Earl of Derby and the 2nd Duke of Buckingham, which had been granted to him by Parliament. Fairfax also discusses his plan to build a house on Bishophill, York, for which the architect Edward Carter (d.1663) submitted 'models' in 1651.
2. ff. 44-56. A series of political papers including the warrant from Parliament appointing Chaloner Governor of the Isle of Man in 1659 (f. 56).
3. ff. 57-87 Letters and miscellaneous material, mostly copied after Chaloner's death in 1660 and partly (ff. 60, 64-66, 69, 70) relating to attempts by his son Edmund to secure his father's lands from forfeiture. Included are an imperfect copy of his denial of any active role in the death of Charles I (ff. 67, 68), a list (ff. 82-83) of articles preferred for the impeachment of Clarendon, 1667, and (ff. 84, 84b) arguments in favour of the establishment of a standing army, 1685.
