Sir William Dugdale''s ''Book of Monuments''
- Scope & Content:
-
Also called ''Book of Draughts''. Partly autograph, with drawings and paintings by William Sedgwick, heraldic draughtsman. Containing records of ecclesiatical monuments which Dugdale saw in some thirty-seven cities, towns and villages during two separate expeditions to London, the Midlands and Yorkshire and which were considered threatened by the impending Civil War. The volume consists of drawings, mostly pen and ink with coloured wash, depicting stained glass, shields of arms, monumental brasses and tombs together with notes on and facsimiles of their inscriptions in Dugdale''s hand. The present order of leaves disregards the dates of recording as noted on some pages.
Among the places which received the most attention from Dugdale are the cathedrals of Lichfield (ff. 1-16), Lincoln (ff. 92-113) and Peterborough (ff. 118-131v), as well as St Paul''s in London (ff. 164-186v). The set of windows at St George''s Church, Stamford, showing the founder Knights of the Garter with the life and martyrdom of St George, are also depicted (ff. 152-162). The drawings of funerary monuments include the tombs of the Earls of Warwick in the Beauchamp Chapel in St Mary''s Church, Warwick (ff. 33-34), those of the Earls of Rutland in Bottesford Parish Church (ff. 74v-79), and the Burghley tomb in St Martin''s Church, Stamford (f. 68). These are the earliest known depictions of many of the monuments portrayed, many of which were destroyed soon after Dugdale recorded them. For an account of the tours and method of working, see Dugdale''s autobiography published in The life, diary and correspondence of Sir William Dugdale, ed. William Hamper (1827). Not all the places mentioned in the Life are represented in the present MS, but 17th- ? and 18th-century copies of some of the missing Yorkshire drawings have been identified in the College of Arms ? and in the Lansdowne MSS in the British Library eg. Beverley Minster in Lansdowne MS 896, ff. 35v-39. Add MS 71474 was formerly owned by Sir Christopher Hatton, who may have encouraged Dugdale in, or been the driving force behind the enterprise.
