JEAN-BAPTISTE PORTA: a revision, prepared circa 1816, and apparently unpublished, of the French naturalist Henri Gabriel Duchesne's Notice Historique sur la Vie et les Ouvrages de J.-B. Porta (1801); together with a French translation of Porta's Magiae Naturalis. Purchased by the Patent Office Library in 1906, and transferred to the Department of Manuscripts in July 1994.
Three bound volumes, in the first of which the 1801 printed text of the Notice is inlaid, with many manuscript additions and marginalia; vols. II and III comprise the manuscript translation, with commentary, of Magiae Naturalis, with inlaid engraved illustrations from different editions of this work. The manuscript portions are all in the same hand, which has not been identified with certainty as that of Duchesne.
