HIGHGATE, ST PANCRAS: 'A Plan of an estate situate at Highgate in the Parish of St Pancrass in the County of Middlesex: The Property of Thomas Bromwich Esquire. Surveyd and delineated by James Ellis partly in 1771 and finish'd in 1776'. Scale bar of 12 chains (= 4.75 inches) [1:2000]. North at the top. The survey was apparently prompted by the purchase in 1770 by Bromwich, a wallpaper manufacturer of Ludgate Hill, of lands on the west side of the 'Passage Way into the Lands' marked on the plan, and by subsequent exchanges of land with Thomas Cave, who owned lands to the north-east, and the creation of new field divisions (see Percy Lovell and William McB. Marcham, Survey of London 17: St. Pancras Part I Highgate Village (1936), pp. 65-68). For James Ellis of Whetstone (fl. 1755-1800) see Peter Eden et. al. Dictionary of Land Surveyors. Part of the site is now covered by Highgate Cemetery. For later surveys of parts of the lands shown see Add. MSS 12545P and 60740. This seems to be the same map recorded by Lovell and Marcham as owned in 1936 by Frank Marcham (who presented Add. MSS 41305-41308, 41654-41656, 45880, ff. 68-69, and Add. Ch. 66172, 66173, and 70819). Purchased at Sotheby's, 12 Dec. 1994, lot 144.
Ink and coloured washes on vellum. 568 x 480mm. on sheet measuring 620 x 540mm.
