JOHNSTON PAPERS: calligraphic materials by Edward Johnston (b.1872-d.1944) and correspondence with Frank Rinder, agent for the National Gallery of Art, Melbourne. Johnston executed these pieces for Rinder, several for presentation to Mrs Edith Rinder and others commissioned by the Melbourne National Gallery. Rinder was the only client and friend allowed to retain trial-pieces, some of which are included here. See P. Johnston, Edward Johnston (1959), which refers to some of the artwork and correspondence. Purchased at Phillips' (see sale cat. 11 Nov. 1993, lot 600).
