CHRONOGRAMS: mostly of German origin; circa 1654-circa 1702. Collected and partly transcribed by James Hilton, F.S.A., 1899. Mostly Latin, with French and German; Hilton's transcriptions in Latin and English. A note by Hilton on f. 1 gives the origin of the 17th and 18th century leaves in the volume as 'apparently from note books broken up by the bookseller at Munich who sold them to me from time to time in 1899.' He bequeathed his collection of books of or relating to, chronograms, to the British Museum, and several partly printed volumes from this bequest (Add. 52608 A, 54196, 65193, 68939-68940, and 70591) have previously been transferred from Collection Development. Hilton states in his note on f. 1 that 'it is possible that some [of the chronograms] may have been copied from printed originals which have not come under my notice': only the chronogrammatic epitaph on the Capuchin monk the Venerable Mark of Aviano written by Emperor Leopold I (ff. 58-58v, 61) is printed by Hilton in his second volume of chronograms, Chronograms continued and concluded (London, 1885), p. 313 from the printed text in Aemilianus Hemmauer, Historischer Entwurff der im Jahr tausend siben hundert ein und dreyssig tausendjährichen Obern Alten Aich (Straubing, 1732), Hilton's copy of which is pressmarked 1126.g.28. Chronograms relating to Emperor Leopold I and his third wife Eleonore Magdalena Theresia of Neuburg, and his daughter Maria Elisabeth, Governor of the Netherlands (ff. 48-50v); and to the occupation of Lindau in 1702, written by Leopold's confessor (ff. 70v-71) are not the same as those printed by Hilton in his first volume, Chronograms (1882), p. 134, Chronograms continued . . . op.cit., pp. 162-163, 179, or the third volume in the series, Chronograms collected, (1895), p. 293. Acquired by the British Museum as part of the Hilton Bequest, 1907. See B.M.Q., V, 1930-31, pp. 119-120. Transferred from Collection Development and incorporated in 1995.
Ink on paper; ff. i+71. 205 x 170mm. Bound in marbled boards with buckram on spine and corners.
