COCOS OR KEELING ISLANDS. 'Plan van de Eilanden Kokos of Keeling naar een M.S. ingezonden door den Luitenant ter Zee H.A.V. Karnebeek 1828 . . . A.K. Weddiktz tekenaar'. Scale circa 1:45000. Scale bar of 6 'Engelsche mijlen' (= 7.375 inches). Dutch. The chart predates the claims of both the Dutch and the British to the islands, which had been discovered by Capt. William Keeling in 1609 on a journey out of Batavia. Direction Island was settled by Capt. Ross and his family circa 1826 but he was not allowed by the Dutch to raise their flag, even after 1829 when they laid informal claim to the islands. The ownership and superintendence of the Cocos Is. stayed in the Cook family after the islands came under British protection in 1856. Purchased from Sotheby's, 26/27 October 1995 (lot 604).
Ink on paper; 625 x 1020mm. Traces of pin-holes at the outside edge of the sheet.
