VALLETTA: [plan of town of Valletta and surrounding fortifications]. 1822, with notes to 1840. Scale circa 1:4000. Scale bar of 250 cannes (= 5 inches). The plan gives a detailed outline of the port and harbour as well as the town. Streets and churches are marked, with areas coloured in blue wash being those conceded by the government of Malta to the Royal Navy, and earmarked for use as dockyards, schools, and hospitals. The plan, which also carries heavy annotations relating to later property transactions for the Royal Navy between 1830 and 1840, was clearly intended to serve as a record of ownership, and details how land was acquired for the use of the Navy in the Mediterranean during the establishment of the first administration of Malta under British control by Sir Thomas Maitland, Governor of Malta 1813-1824. The earliest note on the map, for 1822, is signed (illegibly) on Maitland's behalf, and later annotations are signed by, among others, Adm. Sir Pulteney Malcolm and Sir Thomas Briggs, Accountant-General of the Navy. Purchased from Christies', October 1995 (lot 134).
Ink and watercolour on vellum; 490 x 685mm.
