Haines/ Stonor Papers: contents of an autograph album, with some loose material, consisting of letters, letter covers and signatures of British statesmen, peers, politicians and bishops, etc.; circa 1816?-1900, n.d.;
- Scope & Content:
-
Partly imperfect. Apparently collected by W. H. Haines, a Clerk in the House of Lords. Many of the letters are addressed to him or to another Clerk, Francis Stonor, and some bear annotations, possibly by Haines. One letter cover is addressed to T. W. N. Birch, Clerk Assistant to the House of Lords (f. 127), and there are one or two other items addressed to other probable Clerks. Many of the letters refer to the routine work of the Clerks of the House of Lords, particularly to committee work. Some dozen of the letters, circa 1827 - circa 1844, are addressed to the Lord Chancellor, Lord Lyndhurst, including letters from Canning, Wellington, Aberdeen, Brougham, Ellenborough, and William IV. There are also a few letters from or to Lord Chancellors Brougham and Campbell in the collection, including letters from Lords Althorp and Durham. Other letters are addressed to Lord Redesdale, Chairman of Committees 1851-1886, to other peers, several of them House of Lords officials, and to Stonor and Haines; other letters were clearly collected as autographs either by Stonor, or, more likely, Haines, for instance a letter of Sheridan [ bef. 1817 ] ( f. 37 ), and, at the end of the material, letters from actors and actresses, including one of Charles Kean the Younger (f. 104; imperfect ). Two letters of Sir Charles Barry to Lord Clanricarde refer to the glass and lighting of the House of Lords (1854) (ff. 136-137v). There is also a letter to Stonor from Caroline Norton, n.d., (f. 116). A general invitation to a dinner for cabinet ministers, from Lord Lyndhurst (f. 7; [1844-1845?]), is signed or initialled by Wellington, Gladstone, Aberdeen, Graham and others. Later letters include one from Lord Salisbury (1884), concerning legislation affecting the housing of the poor (ff. 144-145v). At f. 109 is a MS index, incomplete, with some of the items listed no longer with the collection. Folios 110-170 are material originally found loose with the album. The items consist partly of leaves with their original letters stuck on, cut out of the album at some stage (ff. 110-135), and letters and signatures intended for the album, or for another, but which were never tipped in (ff. 136-170). Purchased from Miss C. Haines, 28 March 1995.
