Croker Papers. Correspondence of John Wilson Croker P.C., M.P. (b.1780, d. 1857), Secretary of the Admiralty 1809-1830, and a founder of the Quarterly Review, with George Hamilton Gordon, 4th Earl of Aberdeen; 1828-1855, n.d. Many of the letters relate to foreign policy, especially to relations with the United States. Several letters refer to the Webster-Ashburton Treaty negotiations, to the related rediscovery of ‘The Red-lined Map’, or ‘King George’s Map’, in the King’s Library, British Museum, and to other relevant maps in the United States and in Paris, which were rediscovered and consulted at this time (1842-1843). The subject is touched upon, slightly inaccurately, in Muriel E. Chamberlain, Lord Aberdeen, (1983), pp. 325-6. Other topics covered include Quarterly Review articles and the press generally, William Pitt the Younger, the Slavery problem, the Oregon boundary question (1846), and Lord Holland’s Memoirs. On f. 57v is a pencil plan of a room with a list of its planned (?) fittings, n.d. [19th cent.?]. Apparently largely unpublished; pencil markings and directions suggest, however, that the letters were at some time, in part at least, in the possession of L. J. Jennings, the editor of Croker’s correspondence (The Croker Papers, 3 vols., 1884). Imperf. (?) old sale catalogue description, ff. ii, iii. Some items seem to have been added to the collection after the sale. Some blank leaves. Partly copies, partly typewritten. See also Sir Arthur Hamilton-Gordon, The Correspondence of the Earl of Aberdeen, privately printed, 1858-1888. For related correspondence see Add. 43123, Croker/Aberdeen correspondence, 1819-1855. For Croker see also Add. 41124-41229, 52465-52472, 60286-60289. For Aberdeen see Add. 43039-43358, 51063. See also Stanmore Papers, Add. 49199-49285. Purchased from Quaritches, April 1997.
Paper; ff. iv + 122. Bound vol., modern Riviere binding, brown morocco, with gilding [circa 1922?]. Bookplate of 1st Viscount Cowdray, dated 1922.
