SURREY ESTATE MAP.. 'Map of Rough Tugley Farm in the Parish of Chiddingfold in the county of Surrey belonging to George John Gibson Esqr 1821', by William Tewsley. 'A scale of chains'. Scale bar of 24 [chains] = 160 mm. Scale circa 1 : 2970. Oriented with NNE at the top; the 'windrose' is in the form of four stylised oak-leaves, with an acorn used to point north. The map is a good example of a decorative Regency estate map, neatly bound with narrow green silk ribbon and attached by the same to polished wooden rollers, the outer of the pair retaining the brass rings for attaching the outer roller to the appropriate fitment on a map cabinet. Purchased from Sanders of Oxford (map catalogue, item no. 237), July 1997.

Ink and watercolours on vellum. 350 x 545 mm. on sheet 375 x 570 mm. Inner roller circa 17 mm. in diameter and 390 mm. long, outer roller a flat bar 17 mm. wide and 370 mm. long, pierced with three holes where ribbons are threaded through and sewn to the binding on the right-hand edge of the map. There are no holes in the inner cylindrical roller and only one of the ribbon attachments on the left-hand edge remains intact. Some small holes, apparently caused by rust, halfway down the right-hand edge, not affecting any text.
