PLYMOUTH. 'Plan of His Majesty's Dock Yard at Hamoaze, Plymouth, 1775. Drawn by W. Payne'. Circa 1775. 'Scale 80 feet to an inch'. Scale bar of 500 feet (= 157 mm.). Scale 1:960. The map is oriented with East at the top. Existing buildings are drawn in pink, with proposed new buildings in a light tan. The plan shows some advance on the situation of the dockyard in 1774 as shown in Maps K.Top. 11.88 and Kings MS 44, ff. 13-14: both these maps are illustrated in E. Stuart, Lost landscapes of Plymouth (Stroud, 1991), nos. 151 and 153, respectively. The plan could not have been copied before April 1778, when William Payne was appointed as draughtsman (5th class) at the Board of Ordnance Drawing Room in the Tower of London, and is perhaps more likely to date from the later period between March 1783 ansd September 1788 when Payne was resident in Plymouth as an Ordnance Office draughtsman. The only previously recorded signed map by Payne is at the Public Record Office (PRO MR 1391); this map is not recorded in Stuart, op. cit. For further details of William Payne (b. 1760, d. 1830), see David Japes, William Payne; a Plymouth experience (Exeter, 1992), pp. 11-12. Formerly in the library of Sir Thomas Phillipps. Purchased from H. P Kraus, Inc.; Catalogue 206 (1998), item no. 57.
Ink and watercolours on lightweight paper; 555 x 910 mm.
