The Pilgrim Way: by John Oxenham, calligraphically written and illuminated by Helen A. Lamb; 1925. Twentieth-century interpretation of medieval Gothic script and illumination by Helen Adelaide Lamb, who studied at the Glasgow School of Art, 1907-1915, during the headmastership of Francis H. Newbery (b.1855, d.1946), being awarded a diploma in 1913. Purchased from A. Matsuda, Feb. 1997.
Vellum; single folio. 375 x 225mm. Written, in black ink, in a modern version of a medieval Gothic book hand. The decoration consists of an historiated initial and display script, set within a partial, historiated border, with litterae notabiliores and line fillers, in gouache and gold.
