SIR GILES MOMPESSON: Account-books as commissioner for licensing inns

; Mar. 1617-Sept. 1620. These two volumes cover almost the whole period from the initiation of this new monopoly in March 1617 to the Commons investigation into Mompesson's abuses in March 1621. They record the fines and rents received or due from named licensees at specified inns in thirty-one mainly southern, western and midland counties, and in Pembrokeshire, along with allowances made to Mompesson, etc., from the annual receipts. Belonged, before 1982, to C. C. Goodwyn, F.R.C.I.S., of Amersham (see National Register of Archives report no. 5914). Purchased at Sotheby's, 15 July 1998, lot 204.
Two volumes. Approx. 297 x 192 mm. each. Contemporary covers of limp vellum, with fold-over flap and remains of single vellum ties. Encircled numbers 24 and 25 appear in modern pencil on respective upper covers. As follows:
