HENRY HERBERT, 4TH BARON HERBERT OF CHIRBURY: notebook containing accounts of his executor, John Edwards of Rorrington in Chirbury, co Salop., 1691-1700, and other items relating to Lord Herbert and the Lloyd family; 1688-1740. Before being used as an account book, the volume belonged to Lord Herbert himself, who used it to enter copies of documents circulated prior to the Revolution of 1688. Herbert was an Exclusionist and a supporter of William of Orange. See also Add. MS 37157 for further papers of the Herbert family in the 17th century. The volume was subsequently used as a general entry book for documents and notes concerning the affairs of the Edwards family. Ownership inscriptions of Lloyd Edwards, 1739 (ff. 2v, 106). Purchased from Henry Bristow of Ringwood, Cat. no. 8 (Dec. 1998), item 18.

4. ff. 86-87. 'A Catalogue of the Books in the G[r]eat Parlour att Rorrington'.
5. f. 87v. A memorandum by the vicar and church-wardens of Chirbury, 20 Feb. 1736, concerning the pew of Lloyd Edwards.
6. ff. 88v-92v. Accounts of John Edwards as 'Guardian to John Meredith'.
7. ff. 93v-99v. 'A Letter from Father Peter to Father La Chese Mar. 1. 87[/8]'. Part of an alleged correspondence between Edward Petre, confessor of James II, and François d'Aix, Père La Chaise, confessor of Louis XIV, which was widely circulated in manuscript and print; see examples in English and Dutch in Stowe 305, ff. 137, 140v, 170v, and Stowe 609, ff. 92-96. This and the two following documents are autograph copies by Lord Herbert.
