MILITARY CARTOGRAPHY. Volume of hill sketches, etc., executed by or possibly for, Lt. G. Baker, 16th Light Dragoons, February - April 1816. No scales given. The volume also includes two tables of resources for military encampments in the area of High Wycombe, co. Bucks (both on detached sheets); a sketch of winter quarters, also in the region of High Wycombe, and a plan of the Bay of Algiers, dated aft. 1816. Originally the volume also included four sketch-plans of villages in Surrey, circa 1825 (now absorbed into the south-western edge of Greater London); one of encampments in the Windsor area, and another of the road from Truxillo to Merida (circa 1809 - 1825): all these maps were sold by Abbott & Holder (List 321), October 1998. The surviving sketches all seem to be exercises in draughtsmanship, possibly connected to the military academy at High Wycombe or at Marlow. Purchased from Abbott & Holder, October 1998.
Ink and watercolors on paper; ff. 29. 280 x 435 mm. Bound in printed boards with narrow leather spine and corners with gold tooling, all of it extremely worn.
