. ROBERT DEVEREUX, 2ND EARL OF ESSEX : forty-three letters to Queen Elizabeth I; 1590-1601
- Scope & Content:
-
, with his discourse on war with Spain, 1596, etc.; 1590-1888, n.d. Autograph, partly draft and copies. Late in the seventeenth century the manuscripts came into the possession of the Hulton, al. Hilton, family of Hulton Park, co. Lancs., apparently through the marriage of William Hulton (d. 1694) with Anne, only child and heir of William Jessop (d. 1675) of Gray’s Inn who had acted as attorney to the executors of Robert, 3rd and last Earl of Essex (d. 1646). In 1945 Sir Roger Hulton, 3rd Bart., deposited the papers, then bound up in a single volume, on loan in the British Museum (MSS Loan 23), where they remained until removed by the Hulton Trust for public auction at Messrs. Sotheby’s on 14 Dec. 1992. A description by W. Dunn Macray was published in the 12th Report of the Royal Commission on Historical Manuscripts, Appendix, Part. ix, 1891, pp. 165-178; and a microfilm of the manuscript, made before items were removed for sale at Sotheby’s, is available as M. 2275. For papers and correspondence of Jessop presented by Sir Roger Hulton in 1946 see Add. MSS 46188-46191 and Add. Ch. 71765-71797. Purchased at Messrs. Phillips, 11 June 1999, lots 249, 250.
