Title:

Ford Diaries. Diaries of Colonel Arthur Ford, R.A., C.B. (b. 1834, d. 1913); 1853, 1859-1913, 1960. Royal Artillery 1855; served in the Indian Mutiny 1857-1858; Assistant Director of Artillery Studies, Woolwich, 1870-1873; H.M. Inspector of Explosives, Home Office, 1873-1899. With an account book (1859-1864; 1869-1870) and some miscellaneous papers found loose within the volumes. The first diary for 1853 (Add. 74588) covers part of Ford’s school days at Grosvenor College, Bath, and includes a description of the school in 1853. It is not known if Ford kept any diaries during his education at St John’s College, Cambridge, 1853-1855. His Indian Mutiny diaries are unfortunately now missing. The diaries cover Ford’s service at Woolwich and at the Home Office, including accounts of his duties at Woolwich, and experiments with new military inventions, his journeys on routine inspections of arsenals, factories, and mines for the Home Office, and investigating and reporting on several major explosions and other incidents involving munitions in England, Scotland, Wales, and Ireland. Ford also entered in his diaries both his official travelling expenses, together with the mileage covered, and his private accounts, including in later volumes private accounts relating to other members of his family. After 1899 the diary entries relate largely to his private interests, and to personal and family matters, but also include references to Ford’s work in local government and church affairs while in retirement in Kent. He was for a time Chairman of the Joint Thanet Hospital Board, Chairman of the Broadstairs and St Peter’s Urban District Council, and Vicar’s Warden at St Peter’s Church. The diaries also cover later private journeys to Canada and Europe, 1900-1913. Presented by Miss Brenda Morley and Dr Nina H. Morley of Canada, Ford’s granddaughters, March 1999.
