POTTER HANWORTH, CO. LINCS. 'Map of an estate at Potter Hanworth, Lincolnshire, the property of George Tonge Esquire 1871' by W. Skill, with additions in pencil dated 1875. Scale of 6 chains to the inch. Scale bar of 25 chains (= 106 mm.). Circa 1:4752. The map is a very late example of a traditional estate map soon to be rendered obsolete by large-scale Ordnance Survey mapping, which finally reached Lincolnshire in1883 - 1888. The surveyor, William Skill, who was active between 1846 and 1877, uses mapping conventions of the first half of the 19th century. See entry no. S357 in Sarah Bendall, editor, Dictionary of land surveyors and local map-makers of Great Britain and Ireland, 1530 - 1850 (2nd ed., 1997). Purchased from Nigel Tattersfield, October 1999.
Ink and watercolours on paper, mounted on linen: Whole map 310 x 970 mm, in 5 small sections, each 335 x 200 mm., folded concertina-fashion and attached to left-hand board of covers. Booklet of reference tables attached to right-hand board. Leather binding (by R. Wish of Lincoln) with flap to rear, with 'Potterhanworth' stamped unevenly in gilt block capitals in the centre of the upper cover.
