Hardwicke Papers
- Scope & Content:
-
Miscellaneous bills and receipts of the 2nd - 4th Earls of Hardwicke and the Yorke family, together with similar ephemera of the 7th - 9th Dukes of Norfolk and others; 1723-1947, n.d. In part supplementing the Hardwicke Papers (Add. 35349-36278, 45030-45047). Most of the material dates from 1789-1791 and 1829-1831. The bills and receipts are for both London and country expenditure, frequently for Wimpole Hall, Whaddon or Wimpole Hall farm, co. Cambr., in the case of the Hardwicke family. A number of the payments are by, or on the orders of, Thomas Daintry, agent (?) of the 2nd and 3rd Earls, or Richard Barton, Steward to the 2nd Lord Hardwicke. Many of the names on the documents are to be found in the main Hardwicke papers. The majority of the bills are handstamped “Earl of Hardwicke MSS”; partly printed. For other Hardwicke Estate papers see in particular Add. 36228-36247, Add. Ch. 44742-44890. For Whaddon see also Add. 39814, ff. 242–258. Other Hardwicke estate papers are held by the Bodleian, Oxford, and by Cambridge and Hertfordshire Record Offices. Purchased at Phillips sale, 5 Nov. 1999, lots 639, 647. Similar material also appeared in lots 646 and 649 in the same sale.
Two volumes.
