Grey Walls Press: papers of the Grey Walls Press; 1939-1981, n.d. The Grey Walls Press was established by Charles Wrey Gardiner (b.1901, d.1981) in 1940. The papers include correspondence of Gardiner, manuscripts, financial material, material relating to the publication ‘Poetry Quarterly’ and lists of book publication dates.

1. ff. 1-10. Two manuscripts of unidentified authorship, ‘The Unrespectable Forties’ and ‘Dylan Thomas in Soho’; n.d.
2. ff. 11-18. Letters to Gardiner from Teresa Sillars; 17 Dec. 1948-21 April 1949, n.d. Mostly signed. Referring mainly to her poetry and to Gardiner’s Dark Thorn (1946) (f. 15).
3. ff. 19-23. Letters to Gardiner from Howard Sergeant (b.1914, d.1987); 26 July 1979-2 Oct. 1981. Relating to Sergeant’s poetry including the publication of Selected Poems (1980) (ff. 19- 22), and Poems from the medical World (1980) (f. 20), and his creative Writing Fellowship at Queens Mary’s College (ff. 19-20). There are also references to Gardiner’s work published in ‘Outposts’ including, Time is a Harpy, Variable Moment and Dirge for the End of Time (1945) (f. 23).
4. ff. 24-32. Letters to Gardiner from Hugo Manning (b. 1913, d.1977); 11 April 1970- 2 Oct. 1974. Mostly signed. The letters refer to the magazine ‘The Phoenix’ (f. 24), works by Gardiner including The Dark Thorn (f. 25), The Flowering Moment and Three Poems. There are also references to Manning’s works The Secret Sea (1962) and This Room (1952) (f. 27). Partly imperfect.
5. ff. 33-39. Letters to Gardiner from Fred Marnau; [2 Feb.] 1969-27 April 1979. Mostly signed. The subjects include Gardiner’s book The Dark Thorn (f. 33), the recent death of Gardiner’s wife Diana (f. 35) and editing a manuscript with Roland Penrose (f. 38).
6. ff. 40-91. Letters to Gardiner; 4 Dec. 1939-18 Jan. 1981. The writers include E. M. Channing-Renton (ff. 40, 47), Ian Serraillier (f. 45), Peter Goffin (f. 53), Alan Swallow (f. 54), Jackson Mac Low, suggesting four poems for ‘Poetry Quarterly’ (f. 56), Ruth Speirs (f. 57), Clifford Bax (f. 58), Brocard Sewell (f. 73), Tambimuttu, relating to his memoirs (ff. 81, 83, 85), Dr Alexander Comfort (f. 78), Sir John Waller (ff. 79-80), Sebastian Barker, guest editor of Aquarius Magazine (f. 82), John Heath Stubbs (f. 86), Peter Baker (f. 87) and Hilary St. Clare (f. 91). Many of the letters refer to Gardiner’s book The Dark Thorn and the magazine ‘Poetry Quarterly’. There are two letters from the British Museum on receiving a copy of Green Branches and Poetry Studies Volumes 1-22, 1933-1939 (ff. 43-44).
