Plays from Babenhausen; 1620-1660, early 18th cent. German. Eleven plays from Babenhausen, near Memmingen in Swabia, all unpublished but apparently performed. Many of the texts include cast lists by name and details of original staging, as well as settings, costumes, and the music required. One, possibly unique, consists entirely of 'sides' (scripts of actors' parts with cues) for memorisation by the players. The texts derive from a vernacular theatrical tradition flourishing during the 17th century under the patronage of the Fugger family of Babenhausen, where Anton Fugger had founded a Latin school in 1554. See Herbert Huber, Musikpflege am Fuggerhof Babenhausen, (Augsburg, 2003), especially pp. 42-47. A detailed typescript description received with the collection is now Departmental Pamphlet 4333. Purchased from Arthur Freeman, 24 March 1999.
Paper. Eleven volumes.
