E. H. SHEPARD: four models of Winnie-the-Pooh and friends, with related documents; 1929, 2000. Plasticine and paper. These models, based on the characters he had drawn to illustrate A. A. Milne's Winnie-the-Pooh (1926) and The House at Pooh Corner (1928), were made by Shepard in 1929 for Harry Stopes-Roe (b. 1924), the son of his friend Marie Stopes. Letters written by Shepard in the guise of Pooh to Marie Stopes, 1933, and her son, 1934, are now 58542, ff. 45, 47. Two further such letters to Harry Stopes-Roe (17 March, n.d., and 21 December 1930) were Lots 162 and 165 at Christie's, South Kensington, 14 June 2001, and are illustrated in the sale catalogue, British and Continental Watercolours and Drawings and Original Book Illustrations, pp. 34-5. A copy of Lot 165 is RP 7826. Shepard's correspondence with Marie Stopes, 1929-1957, is 58542, ff. 31-84v. Home movie footage of Shepard sketching Harry in 1929 is in the National Film and Television Archive of the British Film Institute.
