LATIMER, CO. BUCKS. 'A map or survey of part of the lands belongin (sic) to the mannor house of Latimers'. Anon. [circa 1700?]. A scale bar of 20 [chains] = 9.75 inches [i.e. supposed to represent 1:1584]. The map is adorned with miniature farm animals engaged in hare coursing, ploughing, haymaking, fishing, lawn rolling, gardening and rowing. It contains elevations of Latimer House and church (now replaced by the Tudoresque house and new church by Edward Blore of circa 1840 designs for which are now BL Add. MS 42028, ff. 22, 23, 43 and Add. MS 42029, ff. 36-40). Also shown are the farmyard, which may be a still older manor house, dovecote, well house and mill. The plan, which is oriented to the North, shows the lay-out of the gardens, the avenue of trees that then led to the house and gives the names and acreages of the surrounding fields. Compass rose top left. The plan has been trimmed at top and bottom with loss of the red border that still survives at the sides. It is possible that the plan was left unfinished: a worn inscription at the bottom right, 'Arrable and Meadow Land Wood Land' may have been intended to form part of an uncompleted key. Purchased from J.M.L. Gulley, September 2000.
One map. Manuscript. 63 x 104 cm. Ink and watercolour on vellum.
