Title:

British Yugoslav Society: correspondence and papers of the British Yugoslav Society and its predecessors; 1949-1993. In 1949 the British Yugoslav-Association split into two groups following the Soviet Union’s condemnation of Tito. The Anglo-Yugoslav Friendship Society was formed by the anti-Comintern group, which included the MPs Sir Henry Bunbury, Norman Dodds, Leah Manning, Stanley Tiffany, and Konni Zilliacus. It became the British Yugoslav Friendship Society in 1950 and the British Yugoslav Society in 1954. The Society aimed to develop friendship, mutual understanding and cooperation between the British and Yugoslav people and its activities included organising meetings, lectures, films and concerts and publishing pamphlets and journals. Other prominent members included Ernest Davies, Robert Loudoun, Fitzroy Maclean, William Marshall and Margaret Shufeldt. Following the break up of Yugoslavia the society was re-named the British Southern Slav Society in 1992. Presented by William W. Marshall, F.R.G.S., December 2001.
